      RESCUING CALIFORNIA POLICY CONFERENCE

Businesses are leaving California at the highest rate ever recorded, at a time when we are experiencing one of the strongest economies we’ve ever seen, and unemployment is at an all-time low. Do you think these people are leaving because they think the weather here is bad? Or, could it be due to high taxes, regulation, and bureaucracy? The mission of Pro Small Biz California is to build awareness among small business owners and their employees, to help them understand the intersection of business and politics. While government affects a company’s bottom line, our focus is on their employees. If their employer is struggling financially, it affects pay raises, promotions, benefits, and the security of their job - in other words, their financial future. These folks often vote against their own best interest because they are not aware and educated on these issues. It’s time for this to change. At this conference, you’ll learn about the biggest issues threatening small businesses in California. Split Roll Property Tax Initiative Affordable Housing Crisis & Rent Control SPLIT ROLL PROPERTY TAX INITIATIVE Do you know what Prop 13 is? Most people don’t realize that Prop 13 limits how much property taxes can go up each year in California. Right now, Prop 13 covers all real estate, both residential and commercial properties. The Split Roll Property Tax Initiative, which is already on the ballot, carves out commercial properties, including apartment buildings, into a separate tax roll which will no longer have the tax increase limitations of Prop 13, which will drastically increase property taxes. This hugely impacts small business whether they own their building or rent. If they own their building, there operating costs will increase greatly effecting the bottom line and the value of their commercial property. And if they rent, landlords will just pass this expense on to the tenant, or small business, which will increase the cost of doing business. We’ve got to stop the Split Roll Property Tax Initiative before more businesses leave California. AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS & RENT CONTROL Many small businesses want to hire people, but where can they afford to live?  California is experiencing a shortage of highly skilled and highly qualified people to hire.  If they can’t find affordable housing, they often seek employment in other states. Rent control advocates site high rents as the cause of the housing crisis.  Where in reality, the shortage of affordable housing is caused by the lack of supply of new rental housing stock.  NIMBYism (not in my back yard) no growth advocates, restrictive zoning codes, outrageous building requirements and permit fees, high building costs, and the lack of skilled construction labor are what’s limiting the creation of new affordable housing.  We’ve got to stop Rent Control, which is a hindrance to building more affordable rental housing. AT THIS CONFERENCECome learn about these issues and how you can get involved so we can defeat them.  We’ll begin with some words of wisdom from our Keynote Speaker.
