      NxtGov Volunteers: Backpack Drive for Starting Point and Mustard Seed School!

Come join the NxtGov Community Engagement Committee help local non-profits Starting Point and the Mustard School to provide backpacks and school supplies to refugee and homeless children in the Sacramento Area! Starting Point works to provide a welcoming environment to refugee children in the Sacramento area by helping supply basic necessities to help start their new journey in the US. The Starting Point back pack drive provides refugee children with school supplies needed to be successful. With education being so important in a child’s life, the backpack drive is an important event for Starting Point. The goal is to obtain backpacks and supplies to provide to refugee children prior to the beginning of each school year. Starting Point relies on donations and volunteers to obtain the school supplies and help distribute to the refugee children and their families. The Mustard Seed School is a program of Loaves and Fishes that offers free, private school for homeless children 3-15 years old. Many homeless children are not enrolled in school because the places their families find to sleep are often not near a child's school and the family only plans to be there a short time. A major goal of the Program is to prepare and enroll homeless children into public schools, as an average stay is just three to four weeks. NxtGov will be helping to distribute the backpacks and school supplies on Saturday July 27 from 9am to 1pm at a local school, location TBD. If you are interested in helping, please RSVP to c.carroll86@gmail.com by July 15. If you are interested in donating, we will be meeting at 6pm on Thursday July 25 at Bottle and Barlow (outside of the NxtGov Monthly Happy Hour) to collect supplies for distribution on July 27. If you'd like to donate but can't join us at happy hour, please contact c.carroll86@gmail.com to coordinate another time.
