7th Annual CSH California Advocacy Day

7th ANNUAL CSH CALIFORNIA ADVOCACY DAY - MARCH 27 Join CSH for our Annual Advocacy Day to promote legislation and educate lawmakers on solutions that provide housing with access to health and other stabilizing services for individuals and families facing homelessness and housing instability across California. Governor Newsom and many newly elected State Legislators have indicated their commitment to supporting solutions that have proven to stably house and end homelessness for many Californians. But that does not mean our work is over. Our 2019 Advocacy Day offers an opportunity to share stories of impact and make the case for measures like: Funding for operating subsidies, services, rental assistance, landlord incentives, and interim interventions through one streamlined application process (budget request attached), Creating a grant program to serve youth experiencing homelessness,  Redirecting State prison and parole resources for housing and services, and Strengthening a program to fund homeless services through Medi-Cal. Budget Requests for Housing & Homelessness JOIN US IN SACRAMENTO! We will meet in Sacramento at 9:30 a.m. and will schedule our last meeting to end by 3:00. Lunch is provided Plane tickets cost approximately $140 roundtrip if you book a month ahead, but are now available from some locations for $78 roundtrip.  Please RSVP by March 11th SEND YOUR SUPPORT ELECTRONICALLY If you cannot attend in person but would like to support CSH’s state advocacy work, you can do the following: Support our budget requests for this year. To support, simply e-mail your organization’s logo to The budget request focuses on items we are prioritizing around ending homelessness, including the following:   *   Increase state low-income housing tax credits to $500M/year, ongoing,   *   $100M/year in ongoing funding for a new homeless youth grant program, and   *   $2B in one-time funds to address homelessness among adults, which would consolidate non-capital programs addressing homelessness into one HCD program. This new "Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool" program would allow cities, counties, and homeless Continuums of Care to apply and would offer a menu of options for funding (operating funding, services, rental assistance, landlord incentives, and interim interventions). Send a letter of support for AB 307, the Combatting Youth Homelessness Grant Program bill. Complete our sample letter and send to AMPLIFY OUR MESSAGE Share your experience advocating to end homelessness. #CALobbyDay TWITTER @CSHinfo INSTAGRAM csh_innovate  Frequently Asked Questions Q: Do I have to have experience lobbying to attend the CSH Advocacy Day? A: No! We will be advocating in teams, and every team will have a member with experience in doing meetings with legislators and their staff. You do not need experience to be an effective advocate. CSH will provide some information ahead of time on what to talk about and tips on best practices. As a general rule, though, YOU are the experts, and legislators want to hear from you about homelessness and what works to solve it. Q: How will I know where to go and what to do on Advocacy Day? A: CSH will hold several webinars, one of which will be recorded, and a brief in-person orientation on the day of to familiarize everyone with our Advocacy Day. In the meantime, here are some of the logistics: ·         We will be meeting in the Capitol, in the Eureka Room (basement). People can leave their luggage and return to this room during breaks in their day, including a lunch break. ·         We will be offering a catered lunch in the Eureka Room from 11:30-2:00. ·         We will meet at 9:30 a.m. and the last meeting is expected to end at 3:00 p.m. ·         We will be lobbying in teams of 3-5 people per team, and each team will do about six meetings with legislators and their staff. You will meet your team upon arrival.   Q: Will CSH pay for my airfare or other travel expenses? A: No, unfortunately, CSH does not have the resources to pay for everyone’s travel.   Q: What if I can’t support one of the items set for us to talk about with legislators? A: If you let us know ahead of time, we will be sure to include you in a group where that issue will not come up. We advocate only on 2-3 issues per meeting, depending on each legislator’s interest and committee assignments, and we can exclude a topic or agenda item from your team’s meetings if necessary.   Q: I don’t know who my Assemblymember and Senator are. How can I find out? A: You can go to the California Legislature’s website at to find out. Simply enter your address, and it will provide the names of your State Assemblymember and Senator.   Q: What if my organization has not yet taken a position on the items you are promoting during Advocacy Day or want to advocate on behalf of a different bill or budget item? A: You don’t have to have a position to educate legislators on the issues or the items. Because we do meetings in teams, we discourage people from raising issues or bills we haven’t discussed ahead of time. However, if you would like us to consider a bill you think we should add to our policy priority list, please let us know at least a few weeks ahead of time.
