SOCA Historic Home Tour 2013: Mansion Flats

On Sunday, September 15, the Sacramento Old City Association (SOCA) presents its 38th annual tour of historic homes in Sacramento's central city. Each year, we offer an inside look into the beautiful and historic buildings that line Old City streets, and some of the newest infill development projects in the city. This year's tour of the Mansion Flats neighborhood, in the northern part of the central city between 12th and 16th, C and H Street, features homes in the Second Empire Italianate, Queen Anne, Craftsman, Colonial Revival and Classical Revival styles, and new infill housing. This year's Home Tour includes inside looks at five of Sacramento's historic homes, but two are of particular interests to anyone interested in Sacramento history: the famous Historic Governor's Mansion, originally built for Huntington-Hopkins Hardware manager Albert Gallatin, and the home of a dozen California governors, and the infamous Dorothea Puente House, the boarding house where a half-dozen unfortunate victims of Dorothea Puente's penchant for poisoning tenants were buried! The other homes on the tours are less famous (or infamous) but equally interesting: the Hale Mansion, built for the manager of Sacramento's branch of the Hale's department store chain (and son of the owner), a house lovingly restored by master housewright Roger Lathe, and a 2008 modern infill home featuring some of the latest 'green building' technology. In addition to the "indoor" tours, the Home Tour booklet includes a walking tour of more than a dozen other beautiful and fascinating homes, businesses and community landmarks of the Mansion Flats neighborhood. Tickets may be picked up at the street fair on the northwest corner of 16th and H Street, the parking lot of the Clarion Mansion Inn Hotel. The Mansion Inn parking lot is also the site of our street fair, featuring local contractors and artisans specializing in historic home rehab and remodeling, local businesses, artists and crafters displaying their wares, local nonprofits, advocacy and history organizations. Local musicians will perform at the street fair. The tour is self-guided: at the ticket booth you'll get a wristband and a guidebook with the home locations. Show your wristband at the door of each house for admission, and docents will lead you through each house. Tour at your leisure, visiting whichever houses you like, at your own pace. The guidebook also includes a self-guided tour of sixteen other fascinating places in the Mansion Flats neighborhood. The tour costs $30 on the day of the event, or $25 in advance via this website. SOCA members may purchase advance tickets for $20 with secret code! The street fair is free. Started in 1975, the SOCA Home Tour was created to showcase historic homes in neglected central city neighborhoods. Members showed off their home-repair projects and shared techniques, tools and advice. As these neighborhoods became the region's favorite destination for culture and entertainment, the home tour has grown into a celebration of central city life, including art, culture, business, entertainment, history, downtown living, and the irreplaceable beauty of Sacramento's historic neighborhoods. The tour is also a fundraiser that helps SOCA carry out its mission to preserve and enhance a high quality of life for Central City residents, businesses, working people and visitors. Look for the Sacramento Old City Association banner and green tablecloth. Check in at the ticket booth and a volunteer will give you a wristband and guidebook. The guidebook has the addresses of all the homes (within a 2-3 block walk) and the wristband gets you in the door. Tour the neighborhood at your own pace!
