Exhibitions: Dimensions of Black and John Cage's "33⅓"

Dimensions of Black — A major group showing of works by leading African American contemporary artists. The exhibition, organized and first presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in collaboration with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art, and now coming to UC Davis, which has added rarely exhibited works from the university's Fine Arts Collection, by artists connected with UC Davis.

John Cage's 33⅓ — The composer John Cage’s first participatory work, an immersive sound installation that he debuted at UC Davis nearly 50 years ago, in Freeborn Hall. The Manetti Shrem Museum is re-creating the experience — setting up turntables and speakers, and inviting visitors to play vinyl records at random, for a cacophonous sound exemplifying Cage’s interest in the use of chance and variation in musical composition.

      Opening celebration: 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. Regular hours: noon-6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; noon-9 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
